Clinical Asepsis (MA 109) 40 hours
This course addresses clinical asepsis and safety concerns in the anesthesiology environment, including methods for cleaning, high-level disinfecting, and sterilization of equipment. Topics include first aid training, medical office emergency response, infection control, CPR, OSHA, MSDS, and personal protective equipment.
What are the two types of asepsis?
There are two basic types of asepsis: medical asepsis and surgical asepsis.
Medical asepsis (a.k.a. “clean technique”): practices that kill some microorganisms to prevent them from spreading.
Surgical asepsis (a.k.a. “sterile technique”): practices that completely kill and eliminate microorganisms.
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to do the following:
- Use library resources to research current events occurring in this field of study.
- Know and understand terminology associated with asepsis
- Identify universal, standard and special Precautions
- Identify modes of transmission of infectious pathogens
- Identify procedures that prevent transmission of infectious pathogens
- Employ Universal Precautions regarding employee safety from blood-bornepathogens
- Identify and employ Medical aseptic procedures
- Understand proper hand washing procedures
- Understand and employ barrier precautions
- Identify and employ proper surgical aseptic techniques
- Understand and practice proper surgical hand wash
- Understand and respect sterile field boundaries
- Identify and employ appropriate sterile barrier procedures
- Define terminology associated with sanitization, disinfection, and sterilization, procedures
- Equipment cleaning and maintenance records
Grading
Student performance will be evaluated relative to knowledge, skills, and professional behavior. Exams, quizzes, and projects will provide evidence of success in meeting the course objectives.
